Beginning and Intermediate Ceramic Hand-Building

Are you new to the world of pottery? Are you a potter in love with hand-building? Explore the three major hand-building methods: pinch pot, coil and slab using a project-based approach. Students will also be introduced to the extruder and tile-making. Experienced potters can build upon the projects introduced or pursue their own work. Clay must be purchased from the instructor.

This class is for both intermediate and advanced students who wish to work at their own pace. The instructor will distribute clay, answer questions, and assist students through demonstration and problem-solving in both hand-building and wheel-throwing. Wheel instruction will be provided for those interested. Clay must be purchased from the instructor. Students must have previous clay experience at Midland Center for the Arts. Exceptions must be approved by the instructor prior to registration.

Ceramic Tool Usage

This class will concentrate on the tools used in the making of pottery. Demonstrations and advice will be given to students in the proper use of hand tools as well as the spray booth and slab rollers. Clay must be purchased from the instructor. Students must have previous clay experience at Midland Center for the Arts. Exceptions must be approved by the instructor prior to registration.

Painting

Beginning and Intermediate Oil Painting

Learn the basics of oil painting or hone your current skills as you learn to manipulate brushes, mix color, and apply paint using traditional and contemporary processes. Students will study old masters’ techniques such as grisaille and painting alla prima, while developing an individual style within still life, landscape and portrait subject matter.

Beginning Digital Photography

This class is for beginners or those wanting to improve their photographic skills and technical concepts like: exposure, aperture, film speed, shutter speed, white balance and exposure compensation. Basic composition will be discussed. Students will participate in several photo situations and critique. Bring your camera, tripod and camera manual to the first class. Six weeks in length.

Darkroom Refresher

Digital is not the only way! Learn or re-learn the basics of film photography and darkroom film processing. Start with film, expose it, develop it and print your image in The Center’s darkroom. Students will be provided with two rolls of film and 12 sheets of photographic paper. If you don’t have a manual film camera, the Center has cameras to loan out to students. The goal of this class is to have students trained to use the darkroom on their own.

This class is for students who have taken the Darkroom Refresher class or have some previous darkroom experience. Students are responsible for their own film and paper supplies. Other darkroom chemicals will be supplied and maintained, along with use of the darkroom whenever The Center is open. The instructor will be available in the darkroom once per week for two hours, otherwise available for phone, text or email consultation. Have a darkroom without building your own!

Smartphone Photography Critique

Join our monthly discussion group to share your smartphone photography! New assignments each month as well as an open category for your own ideas. You and your classmates will discuss your photographs and review familiar and new phone app techniques. Thoughts and suggestions are shared in a relaxed and creative atmosphere. Experience with smartphone photography apps is recommended. Bring a printed/framed image for the final class.

Jewelry Lost Wax Casting

Take your designs on paper through the process of lost wax casting to create finished jewelry. Beginning students will execute a guided project; intermediate and advanced students will work on their own designs. Wax working, casting and finishing techniques will be demonstrated. Hand-fabricated jewelry offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the versatility and endless possibilities of manipulating precious metals and gemstones into objects of adornment. Students will learn fundamental jewelry manufacturing techniques while working in gold and silver, as well as essential geological information about gemstones and how they should be cared for during the manufacturing process. Students must purchase all raw materials.

Beginning Fused Glass

ONE-DAY WORKSHOP

MAY 16, 2020 / SAT / 10 AM - 2 PM

Learn fundamentals of fusing glass while creating your own artwork! Each student will create one five-inch tile and two small jewelry pieces. Finished work will be ready for pick up the following week. Long pants and closed-toe shoes should be worn. Safety glasses provided; bring an apron or smock if desired. Material fee of $25 must be paid to the instructor. Takes place off-site at the instructor’s studio which is unheated and has un-air conditioned, so please dress for the weather.
